Written by Team Urban Tree

On account of International Women’s day, team Urban Tree has meticulously chosen some great women achievers of our country. As we celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievement of women on March 8, this is a series of blogs that feature those strong women of India who have made their way up to become successful by breaking stereotypes!

A small district located 200 kilometers outside of Lucknow known as Ambedkar Nagar is where the famous Arunima Sinha was born. Her father was an engineer in the army and her mom is a supervisor at the health department. Growing up, Sinha was fond of cycling most of all and was very good o playing football and volleyball. She pursued law after her post graduation and wanted to kick start a great career.

The Incident That Changed Her Fate

One day she got onto the train to travel to give her exams to join CSIF, little did she know that her life would undergo a huge turn. It was here that she was confronted by four to five thugs who demanded her gold chain which was a gift by her mother. Refusing to part with it, she showed resistance and the thugs proceeded to grab her by the limb and haul her right off the train. To make matters worse her leg fell on the opposite track and before she could react, another train went right over it.

Her Struggle:

Her leg was then amputated by the doctors at the Bareilly District hospital while Sinha was completely conscious after an entire night spent screaming and crying in pain. Amidst the sea of supporters and scapegoats that either stood beside her or were scrambling to save their own skin, Sinha decided to climb Everest. The public opinion had reduced her to either a victim or an attempted suicide case. The only way to redeem herself was to accomplish the task of climbing Everest, a task that caused the doctors to question her mental health at the time.

Her Achievement:

Training began at the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering, the best in all of Asia. After that came the 18 months of rigorous training where Sinha climbed smaller but still equally dangerous mountains with a few new death experiences encountered during some of them. Even with all the unique problems that were presented by the prosthetic leg she was fitted with and the numerous negative critics that condemned her actions; Sinha was steadfast in her duty to climb to the top and on 21st May 2013 she finally reached the Everest summit.

Now runs a non profit school that helps the handicapped and underprivileged children called Shahid Chandrashekhar Azad Khel Academy as well as published a book titled “Born Again on the Mountain” which chronicles her entire journey.

Her Motivation:

Whenever things get tough for Sinha she recites a poem written by herself when the going that has stayed in her mind always

Rehne de aasma, zameen ki talash kar

Rehne de aasma, zameen ki talash kar

Sab kuch yahi hai, kahin aur na talash kar

Jeene ke liye, ek kami ki talash kar.
