On account of International Women’s day, team Urban Tree has meticulously chosen some great women achievers of our country. As we celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievement of women on March 8, this is a series of blogs that feature those strong women of India who have made their way up to become successful by breaking stereotypes!
Lekha Washington is an Indian film actress. She is also a product designer and has appeared in Tamil, Kannada, Telugu and Hindi films. Lekha was initially recognized for her work as a sculptor in the year 2002 and then became a theater actor. She later began her work as a video Jockey or VJ with SS Music. Lekha’s breakthrough film role was when she was cast as an independent estranged sister in the film Jayamkondaan (2008). She has then gone on to portray many roles most notably in the multi-starrer film Vedam and the comedy Va.
Lekha Washington was born in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, to a father of mixed Burmese, Punjabi and Italian ancestry, Kenneth and her Maharashtrian mother, Geeta. Despite the mixed heritage, Lekha Washington has stated she believes herself to be a South Indian due to her upbringing although she speaks English and Marathi at home.
Studies and Career
Lekha Washington did her degree in the Fine Arts at Stella Maris College before going on to attend the National Institute of Design. She first took a course, Lifestyle Product Design then reapplied in order to enroll in the Film and Video Communication course. While studying film-making, she stated that she preferred a career in front of the camera, rather than behind it.
While she pursued her education, she decided to appear in the Chetan Shah’s experimental English film and subsequently received many offers one of which was to be a music video jockey from SS Music.
Lekha quickly signed on to play the lead role of an orthodox Tamil Brahmin girl alongside Silambarasan in a project of his own creation known as Kettavan. Despite completing a schedule the film was shelved and later cancelled. Lekha made her entry into the Bollywood scene when she played the leading lady in Peter Gaya Kaam Se which is being produced by UTV spot boy.
Her Love For Art
She was an artist and sculptor before she became an actor. She held her first exhibition at the age of 18. After establishing herself financially, she recently started ‘Ajji – the odd product company’ where the designs are out of the box and yet comfortable.
When dnaindia had asked her which of her many professions she enjoys the most, she has said she would love to have a balance of everything.
Lekha, a multi-talented personality with such an artistic and creative life inspires us to explore the many shades of life and also inspires us to try things that we love and be courageous. She is the Power Woman of India!
