Dengue fever, otherwise known as break bone fever is a viral infection caused predominantly by mosquitoes widely in tropical climatic countries. This fever is developed by four related yet different kind of virus carried by specific kind of mosquitoes. Typically, it is the Aedes Aegypti mosquito that is responsible for spreading this disease. An individual can contract dengue fever if he or she is bitten by a mosquito having this kind of virus. As there are four related strains of dengue virus that can cause illness, it is possible to get infected more than once by other types as well. This disease is endemic in more than 100 counties affecting 100 million to 500 million people each year.

Dengue fever is not spread from person to person unless a mosquito carrying the virus bites that person. While there is no vaccination available at present to avoid dengue, most people have chances to recover from dengue fever within 3 weeks without much complication. However, Dengue hemorrhagic fever and dengue shocks are two complicated type of dengue fever spread by the dangerous virus through mosquito bites. Such condition requires utmost care and hospitalization in some case.

Symptoms of Dengue Fever:

Fever is the main symptom of dengue fever with a sudden rise in body temperature up to 105 degrees. Although, many people also experience extreme body aches, vomiting, skin rashes, headaches, nausea, itchiness and swollen lymph nodes. A very common symptom which remains for a longer time even after the fever is gone is the muscle and joint pain. Dengue hemorrhagic fever and dengue shocks have symptoms like bleeding from skin, nose, and mouth, blood vessel damage and low platelet count.

Preventing Dengue Fever at Home

Since there is no treatment or vaccination to stop the onset of dengue fever, it is better to take preventive measures. Following are 10 ways to prevent dengue fever at home:

  1. Most important practice to follow is to remain covered from mosquito bites. Wear full sleeves shirts and long pants, use repellents and sleep under the nets.
  2. Contaminated water is evil; never allow water to stagnate in your house. This is the place where the insect breeds.
  3. Keep the windows and doors closed as much as possible. If you wish to keep it open for ventilation use thick screens to keep mosquitoes away.
  4. Keeping your home dry is extremely effective. Make sure you keep bathrooms and toilets at home dry as most insects cannot survive without water.
  5. Always keep your trash bin closed and little away from the door of the house. Clean your dustbin regularly to avoid dust formation.
  6. Placing a tulsi plant or simply placing the leaves of tulsi and neem tree will stop mosquitoes from entering your home.
  7. It is advisable that children use natural repellent all day and sleep under the protection of mosquito nets.
  8. Appliances such as cooler and refrigerators are often forgotten when it comes to cleaning stagnant water. Remove the refrigerator trays and clean them regularly.
  9. A person with dengue fever at home should be very careful and not come in contact with mosquitoes at all. Keep the rooms and beds clean.
  10. Sunrise and sunset are the time periods that Aedes Adgypti mosquito actively feed on human blood. So try to be at home during this time by following the above precautions.

Prevention is better than cure. Make sure you take these well advised preventive measures and keep yourself protected from Dengue!
