Kiran Bedi is a symbol of heroism! She was the first woman of India to join the Indian Police Services or IPS. Born on June 9, 1949 at Amritsar in Punjab, she is a renowned police officer, well known for being someone who has put in their whole heart in serving the society.
In the recent times, she has been appointed as the Director General of India’s Bureau of Police Research and Development. Earlier on, she was the Police Advisor in the United Nations peacekeeping department. Another of her noteworthy performances was when she was awarded with the UN medal. In the year 2005, she obtained the honorary degree of a Doctor of Law.
Kiran did her schooling at the Sacred Heart Convent School located in Amritsar. She did her graduation in English from the esteemed Government College for Women in Amritsar. She then received her Masters degree in Political Science (or PolSci) from the Punjab University, Chandigarh. She still continued her studies, even after she had joined the Indian Police force. In the 1988 she obtained a degree in Law (LLB) from Delhi University.
Career And Notable Incidents
Her career began in the year 1970, when she worked as a lecturer for the Khalsa College for Women in Amritsar. Two years later she joined the Indian Police Services. It can be noted that throughout her career here, she has taken up numerous and challenging assignments. She has even served as the Traffic Commissioner of New Delhi, Deputy Inspector General of Police in the insurgency-prone area of Mizoram if you did not know that.
She was also the Lieutenant Governor of Chandigarh as well as the Director General of Narcotics Control Bureau. An interesting thing to note about Kiran Bedi is that, she is sometimes referred to as Crane Bedi. The reason behind this name is that once, she dragged the car of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi due to the violation of parking rules.
