Basil leaves most commonly known as Tulsi is considered as a holy plant for Hindus. Hindus consider Tulsi plant as a goddess who is a great worshiper of lord Vishnu. They plant them in their houses and worship it every morning. It is also believed to bring a lot of positive energy.To grow Tulsi plant place Tulsi seeds and sow them in soil evenly. Water the soil whenever top one inch of soil is dry. Make sure you keep the plant under the sun as it requires minimum 4hours of sunlight to grow. Watering the plant is not required when it rains.
The plant also have medicinal values to it. It is an anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, antipyretic, antioxidant, antiseptic and anticancer and are used extensively in ayurvedic medicines. Since the leaves are edible, it can either be consumed directly or soaked in water and drink the water. It is more often used in treating sinus and respiratory problems.fever. It is also used to dissolve kidney stones., and it keeps the skin and hair healthy and glowing. It also acts as remedy for insect bites.
INDIAN BORAGE/MEXICAN MINT
This plant is a tender fleshy perennial plant. The easiest way to grow a Mexican mint is by planting cut stems although seeds can also be used if available.
How to Plant: Cut a 5-8 inches long stems from the central stem. Remove the leaves from the bottom 2 to 3 nodes of the stem and insert into the soil. Make sure the pot has good drainage. Remember not to overwater the plant as it can’t handle much wet conditions.
It is suggested to keep the plant some place where the sunlight is optimum during rainy season and to place them partially under the sun when it is summer as over exposure of sunlight to the plant may turn it yellow and start curling.
Indian borage has the ability to detoxify your body, improve the health of your skin, fight against cold, cough, relieves stress, ease the pain of arthritis and optimize digestion.
ALOE VERA PLANT
Aloe Vera is a succulent species. It grows in tropical climate and is mainly cultivated for medicinal and agricultural uses. This plant is grown in many houses as it maintains temperature level and improves the quality of air in the house.
How To grow: Although this plant grows well under under any light conditions maximum sunlight exposure is ideal. Aloe grows well in dry soil so it is recommended to use cactus potting soil. The best alternative would be potting soil with perlite added. Make sure the plant is positioned upright and the base and roots are well covered with soil. Best thing about Aloe Vera is it need not be fertilized. Listen to your plant, if the leaves become thin and curls down it needs more water. If the plant grows upward and the leaves droop it is probably asking for more sunlight.
Benefits: Aloe Vera helps in relieving heat burns and cuts as it leaves a cooling effect on the wounded part. It is also an alternative for mouth wash. Aloe Vera helps in keeping the diabetes level under control. It keeps your skin hydrated and hence used extensively on skin products. It also helps in digestion, detoxification and boosts immunity.
Chilli is a major spice component of anIndian kitchen. There are variety of chillies each having a different range of taste and heat.
How To grow: Chillies grow well when there is a lot of heat thereby planting them where there is good sunlight throughout the day is a must. Chilli seeds should be sowed in nutrient rich soil. Sow the seed about half an inch below the soil. Water the seeds daily as it requires moisture all the time.
Benefits: Chillies are a huge source of vitamin A, B, C, E. It acts as detoxifiers and is also known to relieve arthritis pain. Chillies give relief from nasal congestion by increasing the metabolism. It also helps in fighting cholesterol and diabetes.
Mint also known as Pudina is a herb. Mint has a strong aroma to it and is used in cooking. How to grow: To plant mint, use the stem cuts we get it from the market. First the sprig should be placed in water and after a week you can see small white roots growing. Wait for another week for it to grow in length. It is always suggested to plant a mint during spring or fall. Use 12-16 inch wide pot because mint spreads rapidly and roots have tendency to choke out the roots of other plants. It should be grown in partial shade. Mint should be watered frequently for the first year. Keep the soil damp but don’t soak it.
Benefits: Mint relieves indigestion, fights aches and pains, skin care, helps to fight oral infections, prevents allergies and asthma, relieves menstrual cramps and pain, boost immune power, beats stress and depression.
Carrot is a root vegetable. Carrot improves vision, slows down aging, cleanses the body, protects teeth and gums and prevents strokes.
How to grow: It grows best in cool temperature. When you grow carrots, the soil should be clear and no trash rocks or pieces of bark should be left. The results are best when grown on the ground. Dig the area where soil is well drained so that your carrots grow straight and long. Seeds should be planted half inch deep the soil and 1-2 inches apart. Water the plant and wait for it until it turns into the size of a finger. Once it grows you can remove dust from its top to check the size and can harvest it.
Beetroot is the top root portion of the beet plant. It is also a root vegetable. Beetroots are grown in neutral moist fertile soil where there is no much of lime and acidity.
The seeds should be sown across the surface and should be covered with 2cm of compost. The distance between each seed should be at least 5-10cms. Water daily until the seed begins to sprout. Once you get sprouts only water them once in every 10-14 days. When you can see the roots you can estimate the size of beetroot. It can be harvested once you see the beetroots like the size of small oranges.
Benefits: Beetroots improve athletic performance and also lower blood pressure. It increases blood flow, decreases obesity, diabetes, heart diseases and helps in losing weight.
Okra which is also known as ladies fingers is a flowering plant but is valued for its edible green seed pods.
How to Grow: Okra should be grown in a place where the plant gets at least 6 hours of sunlight. It’s best to sow the seeds when the weather is warm. Sow your seeds 4 inches apart and ½ inch deep. Water every morning to keep the soil moist. After 8 weeks, the pods will start to grow. Once you see the 1st okra pod emerge it can be harvested regularly thereafter.
Benefits: It helps in maintaining diabetes level, weight loss, improves digestion, improves immunity, and improves eyesight.
It is a herb and all parts of this plant are edible but the leaves and dried seeds are used mostly in cooking. Sow the seeds 0.5 – 1 inch deep in moist soil. Water the plant well and the seeds will start germinating in a week. Plant 4-5 more seeds every 10-14 days, rotating your container so that the newest seedlings are not shaded by the fully grown plants.. Gently remove the stalks and roots of plants that have stopped producing to free up space for new plants.

Mustard is known as sarso in hindi. . How to Grow: Mustard seeds are sowed one inch apart in the soil. They enjoy cool weather and needs 2 inches of water a week. It is best grown in rainy season if not it requires additional watering. A mustard plant is harvested once you see pods coming out of the seeds and grow for 2-3 weeks.
Benefits: Mustard controls asthma and helps to lose weight. It lowers cholesterol, slows down aging, stimulates hair growth and reduces piles, fissures, and constipation. It also improves immunity.
Curry leaves are an important ingredient in the Indian kitchen. It is also used in Thailand and other Asian countries for cooking. It is also used for making Ayurvedic medicines. Curry leaves need a lot of sunlight and can be grown at a temperature of 40 degrees F. Avoid keeping the plant under direct sun if the weather is above 100 degrees F. Use well drained soil and also add some compost, cow manure and river sand to the soil. You can grow the plant using seeds or stem cuttings. It takes 1-2years for the seedling to get established. When you water make sure the plant is drying out the water completely.
Curry leaves are very good for hair. It also protects the liver and the heart. It maintains the sugar level and also helps in digestion. Curry leaves also reduce the side effects of chemotherapy and treats and prevents skin infections.
Tomatoes are mostly grown and used in all parts of the world. Tomatoes grow in a warm place. The best option to grow tomatoes is to buy tomato seeds and then place the pot in a place where it can get more than 7 hours of sunlight a day. It needs warm sunshine to grow better. Bury about 50% to 75% of the plant in the soil. A tomato plant usually needs 4 litres of warm water within 10 minutes of planting it. Space each tomato plant about 45-90 cms apart. The fruit usually appears 45-90 days after planting.
Tomatoes are good for the skin. It protects from several types of cancer. It keeps the bone strong and acts as an anti-oxidant. It is good for the heart, hair eyes and kidneys.
Spinach is a very healthy vegetable and it can be grown in places where the weather is always pleasant. It grows in partial shade and just needs sunlight for few hours. Spinach is grown in trays. Any tray which is 6 inch deep is perfect to grow spinach. Making rows within the tray is a good idea. Place few seeds in each row. There should be 3 inch distance between every row. The seedling comes out in about a week. The seedling within one month grows as lust green spinach plant and is ready to harvest.
